Following is the text from the plaque on the Wall of Honor at HHS. Current and future Salthawks pass by the Wall of Honor each day where they may be inspired by the accomplishments of some of our outstanding alumni.
Richard D. Glaze '49
Lead custodian and friend to HHS students, staff
For 17 years, Chester Richard Glaze has been an institution at Hutchinson High School as a custodian who makes every effort to support students and staff. Glaze has been much more than a knowledgeable head custodian; he truly loves his alma mater and has worked well past retirement age, rising early each day to lead his staff by example.
Glaze was captain of his track team at HHS and excelled in pole vaulting and sprinting. He remembers his teachers and coaches at HHS fondly and has said that he uses the skills they taught him everyday, both at home and at work. He attended Hutchinson Community College and worked for the Hutchinson Fire Department from 1952 to 1975. From 1975-1988, Glaze was manager of a Best Western Hotel in Phoenix. He has worked for many years with the NJCAA, scheduling practice time for teams to use high school facilities. He has also worked with the Reno County Water Festival.
Glaze has been described as “a very devoted HHS alumnus” and is often seen at athletic contests supporting students. He particularly enjoyed working at HHS when his granddaughter was in school. Students and staff are fortunate Mr. Glaze has “been there” for HHS for many years, in many different ways.
